How airbag ECU crash data works

What crash records are, where they live in the SRS module, and why file size matching matters before a reset.

When a vehicle is involved in a collision, the airbag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) ECU - also called the airbag control module - stores crash data and related status flags in non-volatile memory. Those flags keep the module from simply being "cleared" with a basic OBD tool on many platforms. Professional bench repair reads the EEPROM or MCU dump, clears the crash-related records, and writes a cleaned file back.

What is stored in an airbag ECU?

Typical SRS memory contents include crash event counters, deployment history, fault latches, VIN or configuration data (varies by Maker), and calibration tables. Exact layouts differ between Bosch, Autoliv, Continental, Temic, Denso, Mobis, and other suppliers in our 3,657-module database.

Why crash data must be cleared on a dump file

Crash data lives inside the module's memory image. A correct workflow is: disconnect the battery, remove the module, read a full dump that matches the expected file size, clear crash-related regions with a known process, then program the cleared binary. Uploading the wrong length risks incomplete clears or a corrupted ECU.

File size, Memory chip, and Maker

Every supported entry in AIRBAG lists Car, Maker, Airbag part number, Memory type, and File size. The dump you read from the chip must match that size in bytes (for example 256 B, 1 KB, 4 KB, 8 KB). Use Search & upload with the part number so Memory and size can auto-fill.

Bench only - lawful repair

This service is for bench technicians performing lawful repairs. Remove the ECU from the vehicle. AIRBAG is not a diagnostic tool and not for defeating safety systems outside legitimate repair. After rewrite, some brands require coding or configuration with OEM-level equipment.
